How Do We Explain Republic Day to Our Turkish Kids Living Abroad? 🇹🇷

29 October Republic Day: Ataturk, Turkish flag and children

You may live far from Turkey, but you can experience the joy of Republic Day at home!

As we celebrate the 103rd anniversary of our Republic on October 29, 2026, we have a great opportunity to share the meaning of this special day with our children, strengthen our ties with Türkiye and accumulate beautiful memories as a family.

So, how can we explain Republic Day to our children growing up abroad and make this special day meaningful for them? There is no need for big preparations. A little creativity, a good conversation and quality time spent together is all it takes.

As Hurra Türkiye, we have put together three easy and meaningful activity suggestions that you can try at home with your children this October 29th.

1. Prepare a Republic Column together

Start celebrating by creating a small holiday corner in your home!

You can prepare colorful ornaments with your children using red and white papers, crayons and the Turkish flag. Ask them to draw a picture depicting the Republic or to design the Turkey of their dreams.

You can add your children's drawings and words such as "Republic", "Freedom", "Hope" to the corner you have prepared.

Meanwhile, ask them this question: “What does the Republic mean to you?”

The answers your children give may surprise you and enable you to start a nice conversation together.

2. Share Türkiye Stories as a Family

Republic Day is a great opportunity to tell our children about Turkey and our family stories.

Remember the October 29 celebrations in your own childhood. Share with your children school ceremonies, flag parades or special moments spent with your family.

Then, you can video call your elder family members and listen to their memories.

A few questions to start the conversation:

Where is your favorite place in Turkey?

How did you celebrate Republic Day when you were a child?

What is the most beautiful tradition from Turkey that you would like to pass on to our children?

In this way, your children not only learn about the past, but also get to know their family's story and cultural roots more closely.

3. Play the Republic Trivia Game as a Family

How about turning Republic Day into a fun learning experience?

Prepare a small trivia game about Türkiye and the Republic with your children. You can make the questions easier according to the age of your children and discover the correct answers together.

Here are a few questions for your game:

On what date is Republic Day celebrated?

When was the Republic of Türkiye declared?

Who is the founder of the Republic of Türkiye?

What colors are in Turkey's flag?

What would you like to learn most about Türkiye?

After the questions, ask your children to choose something they are curious about about Türkiye and to research it together.

At the end of the game, everyone can share the most interesting information they learned about Türkiye.

Remember: The aim is not to compete, but to learn together and discover the meaning of Republic Day!

Let's Keep the Republic Enthusiasm Alive Together!

Living abroad does not mean losing the bond between our children and Türkiye. Sometimes a picture made together, a shared family story, or new information learned together is enough to strengthen this bond.

Explaining the Republic to our children is not just teaching them about a historical day. At the same time, it is to pass on our family stories, culture and common values to future generations.

This October 29, make a new memory with your children, talk about Turkey and add the meaning of the Republic to your own family's story.

As Hurra Türkiye, we are celebrating the 103rd anniversary of our Republic. Wherever we live, happy Republic Day! 🇹🇷
